Web design and wedding flowers in Sydney

26 Mar

Anyong! So what else have I been doing lately? Well since early last year I got so motivated to learn something new and ended up learning HTML, CSS and a lil bit of java. I studied using the site Codecademy because they make it sooo easy to learn! Nowadays there are so many places to take courses online to learn about new things. edX and Coursera are one of websites that provide online courses, or you could just go to MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) which aggregates different providers of online courses. I mean these websites provide material from the most prestigious universities like Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford, etc.. you name it, and for some you can get a certificate too if you complete it. But you do have to have some sort of discipline because course duration can range from e.g. 8 weeks to 16 weeks and you do have assignments and tests to complete. Okay so back to why I was talking about coding. With the knowledge that I gained online last year, I managed to buy a domain and host a website on my own. I created and designed http://sunpetalsflorist.com.au.

In addition to that, I have learnt how to do wedding flowers and have been helping the founder of Sunpetals Florist, Christine Lee, in Sydney with wedding flowers.

It is 2013, and I am in Kuala Lumpur, and it will be my 17th year here in March! I have absorbed all the energy from my Sydney trip and ready to start a new chapter in my life. I have officially turned 25 and I am ready for something new. I know that 2013 is going to be a year full new opportunities and challenges. It will be better than 2012 and as the years go past I know it will get better 🙂

I wish everyone to have a prosperous 2013!

Happy New Year Peeps!

Research in the Lab

5 Dec

So how is a life of  a PhD student like?

Research in the Lab

Me during my honours year in Monash University, before I had moved over to Taylor’s University to do my PhD.

If you are doing PhD by research on a full time basis, it means reading journals, keeping up to date with methods, equipment used and latest technologies, reading more journals to update your proposal/thesis and running experiments after experiments. In between you have to do laboratory demonstrator work (go into undergraduate laboratory practical sessions and help the lecturer out), attend talks and conferences, give presentations to your peers and your supervisors and oh yes, most importantly work hard on publishing journal papers. We always go onto facebook to write on our walls to let people know what we are going through (because we think that we are going through the toughest time in the world) and we read phdcomics.com because we just totally understand every comic strip there.

So yeah, research is all the behind the scene work and what you read on the newspaper about new treatment or a certain type of disease/condition is after all the research has been done for possibly years or testing.

So do I love what I am doing now? Am I passionate about research?

That would have to be another blog post. 🙂

Samsung Galaxy Camera Launching Event in Malaysia

29 Nov

The event was held in Ciao Restorante, Kuala Lumpur, just next to Caffeinees, the restaurant that I love to go for their Caribbean Pasta (just the thought of it already gets me drooling). Well this was my FIRST ever launching event that I had attended. The media and bloggers were there just to get the word out to the public that the Samsung Galaxy Camera would be sold the next day (November 29th, 2012).

I was amazed by how many people there were  taking photographs during the launch!

This is me next to Adam Carruthers!! I recognized him because I remember that I had seen him on 8TV Quickie before!

What can I say about the Samsung Galaxy Camera? Well, I would have to say I love the integration of wifi and 3G connectivity and how you can snap a photo of a moment in time and upload it through instagram, fb, and other social platforms.  The specs? 16.3 MP, Android 4.1, weighs 300g… etc; I am sure gizmodo and engadget will give a more detailed review about the product. The selling price is RM1,899.

I got to test out the Samsung Galaxy Camera!

So how did I manage to go to such privileged event? Well I was one of the Top 200 shortlisted candidate for the Samsung Mobilers Digital Writer’s Bootcamp and then from there I was shortlisted as one of the Top 15 Pilot Mobiler Test Writers.

All I did was use 2 minutes of my time to submit my entry, because I thought to myself, what if I could be selected, and I did. 🙂

Having fun at the Samsung Mobilers event last Saturday, November 24th. 🙂

Korean in Malaysia

28 Nov
I am a PhD student

I am a PhD student. Watch my video in Korean (below) talking about life as a PhD student at Taylor’s University.

I am a Malaysianised Korean. There I said it! Honestly, it is something I am very proud of. I came here at a young age, in the middle of primary school, and I have ended up doing a PhD in Malaysia.

Living in Malaysia has shaped my way of thinking and given me an abundance of opportunities and great friends. My next stage of my life is to balance my studies together with my entrepreneurial ambitions.

I have volunteered for the Korean embassy before and in fact I have met the President.

I met and worked for the South Korean President Lee Myung Bak

I have started working with Korean entertainers. I recently flew to Seoul to help a friend bring over a korean dance group named Waveya!

Maybe one day I can bring in some K-pop bands into Malaysia.

I just need to dream big and make things happen. Let’s go make things happen! Hwaiting! Saya boleh!

My Entrepreneurial Mindset

Jimmy Choo - I met him!

Jimmy Choo – I met him! I need to meet more of my heroes. Sir Richard Branson/Sheryl Sandberg where are you…?

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle. – Steve Jobs

I never had the time, well maybe I never thought I had the time to write a blog.

It all started with a spark of inspiration which I stumbled upon in Melbourne this March. Up until today, I had been working in the lab just doing research.

I was ready to try new things, ready to go out there and show the world how capable I was, show myself that I could accomplish the many things that I dreamed of as a young girl growing up in Seoul then London then Seoul again and now Malaysia.

Really my whole life had been focused on studying and engaging in my academic studies in order to “achieve” better opportunities. However, since coming back from Melbourne I have realised the importance of connecting with people and making full use of the opportunities presented.

Starting a business and pursuing my dreams

My dream is to start a business or to work with someone who is like-minded in their entrepreneurial pursuits. For me, I have always been creative and I think that my ability to communicate and to listen allows me to focus on helping others solve problems.

Over the forthcoming months I have set my goal to humbly seek opportunities and to find my way in the business world. As Steve Jobs’ says “Don’t Settle”, I have every intention to follow a path of determination as well as diligence in order to pursue my dreams.

Today I am going to a Samsung event in KL. It’s a little bit hush hush but let’s see if I can build upon this opportunity.
